Miracles of Tomorrow… Start with Rehab Today
September 20 – 26, 2015 is National Rehab Awareness Week
As long term care therapists, we are devoted to improving the lives of others. Use this week to Celebrate Your Profession! And to Celebrate YOU!
Every year, the National Rehabilitation Awareness Foundation (NRAF) celebrates National Rehabilitation Week with the goal of educating people about the benefits and impact of rehabilitation for the nearly fifty million Americans with disabilities.
- Share a special resident success story
- Single out rehab staff professional accomplishments
- Find a fun way to educate other disciplines in your SNF on some of the specialized services you provide:
- Have staff walk using braces and assistive devices
- Put the facility staff through some functional balance tests
- Make a poster board display of adaptive feeding equipment and see if nursing staff can label them
- Set up a relay activity where staff are required to complete ADL’s using a piece of adaptive equipment
- Make a poster board display outlining what aspiration looks like and how to prevent it
- Provide sensitivity training while having staff taste test modified liquid consistencies – there’s nothing like a cup of honey thick coffee!
What? Don’t Have Time?
Ok, ok… I hear some of you grumbling. How can we possibly take time out of our day to celebrate? With insane productivity requirements and back-logged piles of documentation coming out our ears…..How?
I hear you. I get it.
But promise me one thing…don’t sell yourself short on this special week. And don’t sell your residents short. YOU are the backbone of this profession and YOU are the reason that the Rehab of Today Creates the Miracles of Tomorrow.
No YOU….No Miracles! Got it?
So even if you don’t have “time” to plan a formal event, take a few {billable…LOL} minutes with each of your residents this week to Celebrate! In spite of any obstacles thrown your way in today’s long term care environment, remember….
YOU are the reason for the:
- independence gained
- dignity maintained
- progress made
- deficiencies avoided
- families pleased
- declines prevented
- outcomes obtained
- appeals won
- profit gained
- compliance maintained
- obstacles overcome
- discharges home attained
Now those are some reasons to CELEBRATE!
